On Thursday 28th March 2014 two jewellery artists – Märta Mattsson (Sweden) and Felieke van der Leest (Norway) – will deliver guest lectures at the Art Academy of Latvia. The event is supported by Nordic Council of Ministers in Latvia and PUTTI Art Gallery. Everyone interested is invited to join the lectures at the room Nr 10 Märta Mattsson’s lecture starting at 2.30 pm Someone once told Märta: “You make jewellery for children, not for adults.” Given that she draws inspiration from her childhood experiences of playing with stuffed animals and slugs, her fellow students in Tokyo were right when they described her work as: ‘KimoKawaii’, which is in fact a combination of two words kawaii (cute) and kimoi (disgusting). Märta’s work is based on the tension that exists between attraction and repulsion. She translates her bizarre fantasies into ornament and invites people to marvel over their oddity. Märta Mattsson was born in Stockholm, studied jewellery art at School of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg; Hiko Mizuno College of Jewellery, Tokyo and Royal College of Art, London. Since 2007 she has had five solo exhibitions, her works have been included in numerous group exhibitions at international art galleries. We have successfully attended another Schmuck (Schmuck 14) in Munchen where the exhibited variety of contemporary and conceptual jewellery for its fans, creators and collectors was almost overwhelming (in a good way). We had the chance to meet old friends, upcoming and already established artists and to see a lot of wonderful exhibitions. It was a pleasure to blend in with this sophisticated crowd and to catch moments (where allowed) with our “soap box” cameras.
