Maris Šustiņš was guided to metal design by his father. Father’s workshop was his favourite place in his childhood. After elementary school Māris went to the Riga School of Arts and Crafts, and afterwards headed to the Art Academy of Latvia.
Māris favourite material is silver. “It is fabulous! Silver is always the same – today or a thousand years ago.”
Plastic silver castings, sometimes gold castings, big semi-precious and precious stones, corals, pearls, enamel, patina and gilt – Šustiņš palette is never boring. His style is constantly changing, surprising his fans. Sometimes one can spot sensual romanticism in his works, sometimes – lyrical art-deco style. Nevertheless, his jewellery may also feature complicated technologic experiments or strike with an unexpected simplicity.
Māris adds gold to his compositions to make them “tastier”. Usually there are no straight geometrical shapes, lines, or angles in his jewellery. His works are plastic, close to natural shapes. Even if they look like impossible to wear, always very practical and comfortable.
As a metal designer Šustiņš masters not only jewellery craft. He has been one of Latvian metal design pioneers and author of various exclusive design objects – staircases of complicated construction, furniture, light objects, interior accessories and different awards.
However, artist’s secret soft spot is not jewellery but jackets. “I love original and strange jackets – so, that no one else around had something like that. Regarding jewellery I can say – as long as women will fall in love and be loved – jewellery will be demanded!”
